Summer is chugging along
That feeling has now passed, and I am ready to kick some caboose! The first thing on my list is a 40th birthday hiking/camping trip that I started visualizing back in November/December of last year, and here in two days, it will become reality!
As the specter of turning 40 years of age began to loom, I tried to think of something monumental to accomplish when that milestone arrived (which it did two days ago - yes, I am now the big 4-0!). My first idea was to do a solo backpacking trip on the Pacific Crest Trail from Castle Crags to Burney Falls. If you know where that is, awesome; if you don't, the power the Internet is at your beck and call. However, after finding out just how far that really was, and also finding out that the elevation of part of the hike meant there were no guarantees that the snow wouldn't be gone by late June, I decided to find a shorter hike. I also decided that although a solitary guy like me would truly enjoy a solo hike, safety concerns prevailed, so I invited four of my good friends from the Sacramento area (one of whom is my city slicker brother-in-law) to go with me. We have had two planning meetings at my house in the process of amassing the myriad of hiking/camping items one needs to live comfortably in the woods for four days.
Yes, four days. We will be hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail from the trailhead near Gumboot Lake Campground, which is about 20-or-so miles west of the city of Mount Shasta to Toad Lake and Porcupine Lake - a one-way hike of approximately 7 miles. My original plan was to also hike another 5 miles to the Deadfall Lakes near Mt. Eddy and stay a night there, but I have been having tendinitis problems in my left big toe, so Toad and Porcupine might be where the buck stops.
I was actually in the Toad Lake vicinity in July of 2007, but I can't wait to go back there and give the area a more thorough exploration. Here is a photo of me from that trip with Toad Lake and Mount Shasta in the background:
When we get back to civilization (that would be the city of Mount Shasta) I am keeping open the idea of doing a day hike to the summit of Black Butte, which is a 6,500+ foot cinder cone that sits in the shadow of 14,162 foot Mount Shasta. My mother and I hiked to the top of Black Butte in July of 2000. I would show you a photo of that adventure, but it was so long ago, that I did not yet own a digital camera, and I am too lazy to scan all my old photos.
Please wish my fellow travelers and me Good Health, and Good Hiking!

25 years ago. Remember when we had a real president?
I know it sounds weird to say, but there are times when I miss the Cold War. In this day and age, I'm not so sure we are the good guys anymore.

The most tone-deaf campaign ad I think I have ever seen
First, a little background. For the last month or two, Barack Obama and his minions have been trying to paint a picture of Mitt Romney as some kind of out-of-touch elitist who fires people on a whim and cares not a whit about the proletariat out there.
So what does Obama do the other day? His campaign releases the following ad, featuring a... featuring an out... of... touch elitist who... fires people on a whim... and cares not a whit about the proletariat out there. That someone would be Anna Wintour, the cold-as-ice editor of fashion magazine, Vogue, whose personality is so venomous that she served as the inspiration for Meryl Streep's character in the novel, and later movie, The Devil Wears Prada. You really have to see this to believe it; and like me, I had to watch it a couple more times to truly believe it:
This ad was so over the top, that leftist commentator Juan Williams had this to say after viewing it:
“That was hilarious. That looks like a parody. It looked like the Romney Campaign planted Dr. Evil in the House of Obama. And, he said, you know, on the day the grim job numbers come out, let’s have someone who reeks of ornamental excess announce that the peasants can have a place at the table. It’s just unbelievable.”My feelings exactly, Juan.

Mitt Romney showing more signs of life than McCain ever did
I have to admit however, that I am quite impressed with Romney's absolutely brilliant move of holding a speech yesterday out in front of the weeded-over carcass of the now-bankrupt and defunct Solyndra headquarters building in California's Bay Area. In so doing, Romney is already showing more fight in his campaign against Barack Obama than John McCain showed during the entire 2008 election cycle. Gawd, what a wuss McCain was!
Just two years ago, our Dear Leader Obama was giving a speech on the production floor of Solyndra, touting the company as a model of what kind of wonderful things can happen when you fund private enterprise with taxpayer dollars. In the case of Solyndra, a solar panel manufacturer in Fremont, California, the Obama administration fast-tracked $500 million to the company, which, within a year, had gone broke. And the taxpayers' $500 million had gone *poof*.
Fast-forward to yesterday, and you had Mitt Romney standing out in front of the empty high rise headquarters building of Solyndra. What an effective contrast to make!

In case you can't run the video of Romney's remarks, here are some of them:
“Two years ago President Obama was here to tout this building and this business as a symbol of the success of his stimulus,” said Romney, stepping off a bus and onto the public sidewalk in front of the Solyndra buildings just outside Silicon Valley. “Well you can see that it’s a symbol of something very different today...” “It’s a symbol not of success but of failure,” he said. “It’s also a symbol of a serious conflict of interest. An independent inspector general looked at this investment and concluded that the administration had steered money to friends and family – to campaign contributors. This building, this half a billion dollar taxpayer investment, represents a serious conflict of interest on the part of the president and his team.” “It’s also a symbol of how the president thinks about free enterprise,” said Romney. “Free enterprise to the president means taking money from the taxpayers and giving it freely to his friends.” “You look at this building behind us; this is not the kind of building that is built by private enterprise,” he said. “This is the kind of enterprise – the kind of building – that’s built with half a billion dollars of taxpayers money. It’s not just the Taj Mahal of corporate headquarters. you probably also heard that inside there are showers that have LCD displays that tell what the temperatures are of the shower water. and the robots inside actually provide Disney music tunes.”Isn't it amazing how wastefully money tends to get spent when it is not your own? Especially when the money belongs to Joe and Jane Taxpayer. Kudos to Mitt Romney for using such an effective backdrop as he dropkicked Obama's taxpayer-funded boondoggle.

May Day in San Francisco
It was sickening to watch these masked assholes bash in the windows of businesses and cars parked on the street, and it was also sickening to watch the emasculated police of the oh-so-tolerant city of San Francisco sit by and watch all the property destruction happen.
Once upon a time in this country, a destructive performance like that shown in this video would have lasted about 30 seconds before the police (and private
citizens) moved in and started cracking skulls.
I weep for my country.

Obama is embarrassed in two more primaries; Democrats eat their own once again with charges of racism
The same result has now occurred in Arkansas and Kentucky, as our Dear Leader lost just over 40% of the vote in those states' Democrat primaries. Heck, in Kentucky, "Uncommitted" got 42% of the vote! That means 42% of Kentucky Democrats were essentially saying anyone but Obama! And just like after West Virginia, Obama's horrible record on just about every issue is eschewed in favor of blaming those darned racists who won't vote for Barack Obama for the color of his skin. And once again, I remind of you that these are all Democrats we are talking about here!
From today's Washington Post:
That President Obama lost roughly 40 percent of the vote in Democratic primaries in Arkansas, Kentucky and West Virginia over the last two weeks has drawn massive national headlines. Those headlines have drawn a collective eyeroll from Democrats — and many others who closely follow national politics — who ascribe the underperformance by the incumbent to a very simple thing: racism... “Race, resentment [and] fear,” explained Donna Brazile, a Louisiana native and Democratic strategist when asked about Obama’s underperformance. “Democrats have not had any messaging in those states for more than a decade. It’s hard to get voters to like you or even know you when all they hear is negative stuff.”Pass the popcorn! This is going to be a fun election to watch!

An Indian state of mind
Now that she has been found out as a fraud on this topic, the lamestream media is twisting itself in knots trying to justify her lies. I previously posted about Fox News contributor Jehmu Greene's racist " bow-tying white boy" comment to Tucker Carlson as she melted down trying in vain to justify Warren's actions. Now we have a new winner for most ridiculous defense of Elizabeth Warren.
Writing for The Hill, Bernie Quigley incredibly posits that Elizabeth Warren, who originally hails from Oklahoma, should be considered a Cherokee Indian because she really, really wants to be:
So Warren's claim to be "part Indian" is correct in mythical terms. Every old-school white Oklahoman is in this regard even if this in nominally not true. But it is not a lie to want to be Indian and to imagine your ancestors were... And I hope Elizabeth Warren doesn't back down on this, because wanting to be Indian, like Hawkeye [the white hero from Last of the Mohicans], makes us in a deeper sense fully American.Wow. Again, one has to ask what Mr. Quigley would have written had Elizabeth Warren's Republican opponent, Scott Brown, been the one to falsely claim Indian ancestry. Somehow, I don't think Quigley would be so quick to dismiss this issue.

What deficit? California State Legislature makes it cost $18,000 to send a simple email
The latest example is Assembly Bill (AB) 2095. This proposed law adds additional requirements to an already existing law regarding the obligations of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), which is the governing body of high school athletic programs in our state.
Existing law commands the CIF to
report to the Legislature and Governor by January 1, 2016, on several specified goals and objectives, such as effectiveness of the governance structure, gender equity, health and safety, and economic viability.Apparently those instructions are not complete enough, because AB 2095 would require that the report that CIF must present should also be electronically transmitted to the Assembly Education Committee, the Senate Education Committee, and the Assembly Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism, and Internet Media Committee.
Keep in mind, the cost in time, debate, manpower, logistics, and printing of a bill as it travels its ponderous course through our state legislature runs about $18,000. That means that this bill - AB 2095 - which simply requires that a couple redundant and unnecessary emails be sent, is costing California taxpayers upwards of $18,000, when instead, couldn't someone - ANYONE! - at the State Capitol simply pick up the phone or shoot a quick (and free!) email and ask the appropriate person at CIF to send the report?
Or, Hey! Look at this! The previous CIF report is posted online, just as the next one presumably will be. Just click here, and your humble blogger can save you, the state taxpayer, $18,000.
And you wonder why this state is $16 billion in the hole.

Yo like gimme a job plz
I just read a fascinating article written by someone who hires for his business, and let us just say that he is underwhelmed by the caliber of many of the job applicants who contact him. An example:
I recently posted an ad on the magical interweb asking for 3D animation help for $25 an hour... I was not surprised and subsequently disheartened by my lack of surprise to see just how many people didn't seem to have time to respond in any meaningful way. If they aren't interested in the job, fine. An hourly wage of $25 isn't a king's ransom. So don't respond if you don't care.
I just don't comprehend the synaptic orgy that it must take to respond with this:
"ima 3D animator with lots of experience. What r u looking for in particular?"
Well, first I'd like someone who writes in whole words. Second, I wrote three frigging paragraphs about what I was looking for.I urge you to read the rest of the article, in which the author points out the good, the bad, and ugly of today's job applicants.

Obama-loving teacher tells her students that they can't criticize her Messiah
I usually cringe at my fellow conservatives when they jump on the "blame-everything-on-teachers" bandwagon when criticizing our moribund educational system, but listening to the illiterate rantings of this high school social studies teacher in North Carolina does no favors for the argument against blaming teachers for our students' academic shortcomings.
A few days ago, at a high school named Tonya Dixon-Neely in the Rowan-Salisbury School District in North Carolina, a student who had grown tired of his social studies teacher's repeated statist diatribes used a cell phone to make an audio recording of a class session. The audio was made with the phone's video camera feature, but the only thing you ever see on screen are the lights on the ceiling, as the phone was obviously sitting in a backpack next to the student's desk.
The ignorance and intimidation presented in what the teacher said in response to her student's question about President Obama is truly breathtaking, and there is a slight language warning, as both the student and the teacher engage in some light profanity of the "sh**" variety:
If you don't have time to listen to the audio, here are some of the highlights as described by the folks at Breitbart:
The video shows a classroom discussion about the Washington Post hit piece about Mitt Romney bullying a kid some five decades ago. One student says, “Didn’t Obama bully someone though?” The teacher says: “Not to my knowledge.” The student then cites the fact that Obama, in Dreams from My Father, admits to shoving a little girl. “Stop, no, because there is no comparison,” screams the teacher. Romney is “running for president. Obama is the president.” The student responds that both are “just men.” The teacher yells -- literally yells -- that Obama is “due the respect that every other president is due … Listen,” she continues, “let me tell you something, you will not disrespect the president of the United States in this classroom.” She yells over the student repeatedly, and yells at him that it's disrespect for him to even debate about Romney and Obama. The student says that he can say what he wants. “Not about him, you won’t,” says the teacher. The teacher then tells the student – wrongly – that it is a criminal offense to say bad things about a president. “Do you realize that people were arrested for saying things bad about Bush? Do you realize you are not supposed to slander the president?” The student says that it would violate First Amendment rights to jail someone for such sentiments. “You would have to say some pretty f’d up crap about him to be arrested,” says the student. “They cannot take away your right to have your opinion … They can’t take that away unless you threaten the president.”So as far as this teacher is concerned, criticizing Obama is not allowed because he is the president, while criticizing Romney is allowed because he is only a candidate for president. Gotcha.
All I can think of is my own classroom experiences in the last decade as I have listened to students criticize George W. Bush (and Reagan in a few cases) in the most hateful terms, and I couldn't care less. I looked at it as an excellent opportunity to ask the students what exactly their complaints were and to ask for details. Even when I agreed with the student's criticisms (especially regarding Bush II), I still challenged the student to back up his or her snarky criticisms with fact.
This teacher did the exact opposite. She would not allow this student to express a different point of view. For merely asking a question about Obama's past conduct, this student was illegally disrespecting the president in the opinion of the teacher. God, what a loser!
Thank you so much Ms. Dixon-Neely for making my job that much harder.

Imprisoned convict gives Obama a run for his money in West Virginia primary; Democrats eat their own in response
Obama predictably won this primary, but only with a vote of 54%. And who got second place, with a very respectable 42%? A convict named Keith Judd, who currently resides in a federal prison in Texas. Wow!
As if that's not hilarious enough, the day-after fallout is just as amusing. I checked that bastion of loony leftism, the Daily Kos, and they are blaming raaaaaacism on this primary vote result. An example:
Being serious for just a moment, how should the Obama campaign take this? A bunch of toothless hayseeds prefer a white guy, literally ANY white guy, to be their nominee over the black guy? I'm positive that's part of it.Or how about this from a commenter on the Huffington Post:
This 'candidate' is an example of how the Republican opposition to Obama has become plain laughable. The clowns who hate President Obama would rather vote for a violent prison inmate than a mild-mannered, thoughtful Harvard Graduate. It says a lot more about the voters of West Virginia than it does about the President. No, it says a lot more about the DEMOCRAT voters of West Virginia. These statist brainiacs are so angry about this result that their emotions have gutted their logic. This was not a general election in West Virginia - this was a DEMOCRAT primary in a "closed" state where only registered Democrats can vote in the Democrat primary. Sorry Democrats, but you own this one. Of course, why is anyone surprised? The Democrat Party has always been a bastion of racism. Don't forget that West Virginia is the same state that sent Ku Klux Klan bigwig (and Democrat) Robert Byrd to the U.S. Senate from 1958 until he died in office in 2010.
So while they are blaming racism on this primary election result, one possibility that the Obamabots seem to be ignoring is that Obama hates coal and has famously promised to put the coal industry out of business and make energy prices "necessarily skyrocket" as a result. And oh, golly gee - what is a major industry in West Virginia? Coal mining!!!
If you aren't so busy shuffling through your deck of race cards, this stuff isn't very difficult to figure out.

Fox News refuses to fire a racist commentator
Jehmu (yes, that's Jehmu) lost her cool during the exchange and let her inner racist come boiling to the surface by calling Tucker (yes, that's Tucker) a "bow tyin' white boy."
Tucker happened to not be wearing a bow tie that day, but he has been famous for wearing them in the past.
Incredibly, after Tucker rather weakly addressed Jehmu's comment by telling her that calling him names wasn't going to help her argument, Jehmu had the gall to utter, "I didn't call you a name," complete with accompanying arrogant smirk and batting of eyes. Roll the tape, and if you don't care to watch the entire exchange, the relevant portion of video runs from 1:10 through 1:40:
For Jehmu to actually insist that she didn't call Tucker Carlson a name (again, a "bow tyin' white boy") tells me one of three things:
1. She was lying and hoped that no one noticed what she said, or simply didn't care.
2. She doesn't consider a comment like that to rise to the level of name calling.
3. She says stuff like that behind closed doors so often that she didn't even realize she said it.
In regards to that third possibility, I see this phenomenon all the time in my classroom and on my campus. A student will be talking to another, and the student will throw out a common curse word, or more frequently, the word "nigga" or some variation thereof, and when I tell the student to watch his/her language, s/he will look at me with a genuinely confused expression and insist that s/he didn't say anything wrong. These students of mine have made vulgar words so much a part of their vocabulary, they don't even hear them anymore.
After Jehmu and Tucker were done with their segment, Megyn Kelly took it upon herself to apologize for Jehmu's comments, but Jehmu has never apologized. Now it is apparent that Jehmu will suffer no consequences from Fox News for her racist statement delivered on-air toward Tucker Carlson. Just imagine if Tucker had picked some fashion mistake of Jehmu's and attached the words "black girl" to it? Or better yet, what if Tucker had been debating Nation of Islam head honcho Louis Farrakhan and called him a "bow tyin' black boy"?
The double standards out there continue to sicken me, but not surprise me.

Barack Obama loves May Day, and wants you to love it, too.
When I was a kid, I remember every May Day watching news footage of Soviet military parades with marching troops, tanks, and gigantic trucks with missiles on them.
How unusual then that our Dear Leader, President Barack Obama, would pick May 1st, 2012 to issue a presidential proclamation that concludes with the following:
In order to recognize the American spirit of loyalty and the sacrifices that so many have made for our Nation, the Congress, by Public Law 85-529 as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day." On this day, let us reaffirm our allegiance to the United States of America, our Constitution, and our founding values. NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2012, as Loyalty Day. This Loyalty Day, I call upon all the people of the United States to join in support of this national observance, whether by displaying the flag of the United States or pledging allegiance to the Republic for which it stands. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth.
BARACK OBAMAI can think of plenty of more appropriate days to reaffirm our loyalty or allegiance to our Republic, to our Constitution, and our founding values.
How about April 19th, when in 1775, Massachusetts patriots kicked off the American Revolution at Lexington and Concord?
How about the last Monday in May, which has long been designated as Memorial Day?
How about June 14th, which has long been designated as Flag Day?
How about July 4th, which has long been designated as Independence Day?
How about September 17th, which has long been designated as Constitution Day?
How about October 19th, when in 1781, our country's independence was guaranteed by our defeat of British forces at Yorktown, Virginia?
How about November 11th, which has long been designated as Veterans Day?
But no, instead Barack Obama chooses May Day, also known as International Workers Day, also known as a common day of celebration in the socialist/communist world. Could the man be any more in-your-face? I find it simply appalling, but not surprising, that he would associate our country - founded in the spirit of God-given rights and individual liberty - with a murderous collectivist ideology that looks at government as God.
God Help us.

Time to scratch Hoppy Brewing Company off your list
The following is an account of a less-than-pleasant encounter with the Hoppy Brewing Company owner/CEO that was posted on Facebook by some friends of my wife and mine. We attend the same church; see each other often at our local athletic club; and we meet for dinner when we are able to secure a babysitter. I have received permission from these friends to post their Facebook narrative, and I have deleted the names for privacy purposes.
First, here is the Facebook post our friends sent out, and then I will post the Hoppy response:
Unfortunately, we've had a bad customer service experience with Hoppy Brewing Company. [Our son] left his DSi case at Hoppy on a Sunday, and we didn't realize it until Monday. When I phoned, there was some "hinkiness" on the phone regarding whether it was found or not, so [my husband] pursued it. He discovered that the manager picked up the case (with games and powercord) and put it in their "lost and found." Then it went missing AFTER they found it. We pursued, because obviously, ONE OF THE EMPLOYEES is a THIEF. If they had not revealed that it had been found and then lost again, this would simply be a hard lesson for [our son] (as it still is) since we aren't replacing it, but we felt there should be some recompense (at least, a formal apology, at most some comps to ensure our business) and instead we received the following note. They have lost our business permanently (the sad part being that we enjoy going there.) They willingly employ and protect a thief. They are willing to alienate us as customers and risk those connected to us. A formal apology and some evidence of discipline was what we were after. Instead we were insulted for making the mistake of trusting the employees of the establishment. Please remember that the case was FOUND and put in the lost and Found and we called 24 hours later to claim it. It was not taken by a patron from the restaurant area. If that were the case, this would not be an issue. Please consider taking them off your list of places to go. Thank you!Just to add a couple details to this story, my friends were not just another family sitting at one table in the restaurant; they were part of a large dinner party that had essentially rented out the entire restaurant. The owner had noticed that the DS was left behind immediately after my friends had gone out to the parking lot. The owner himself (or his hostess) ran out to the parking lot to try to catch my friends before they left. This means there was no question as to whom the DS belonged. The entire dinner party had been paid for with my friends' brother's American Express card, so a contact number could have easily been ascertained by the Hoppy staff. After inquiring with Hoppy Brewing Company about what they were going to do about this situation, here is the email my friends received from the Hoppy Brewing Company owner/CEO,whose name is Troy Paski:
Hi [W.R. Chandler's friend]! :)
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, but I've been tied up with some personal matters these last few days.
1) I felt like we had a good conversation the last time we talked.
2) As a retail establishment, we are not responsible for lost and/or stolen property from guests.
3) I didn't like the tone of your first message, which is partly why I called you to nip something in the bud, and from the tone of this message I like it even less.
4) I apologize for it being missing, and I apologize for being too honest with you.
5) We do tend to over-care for our guests from time-to-time, which makes them feel a bit like family, so if that line was blurred for a moment I again apologize.
6) You were a guest in our establishment, and you lost a childs toy. Shame on us for not picking up after you and catching you before you left without your toys that were left behind.
7) Hopefully this taught you a lesson on better parenting skills.
8) I wish a had something more positive say.
Have a nice day. :-)Actually, once that lost item was put into Hoppy's Lost-and-Found, they can't come back and say too bad, so sad. I direct you to California Penal Code, Section 485:
One who finds lost property under circumstances which give him
knowledge of or means of inquiry as to the true owner, and who
appropriates such property to his own use, or to the use of another
person not entitled thereto, without first making reasonable and just
efforts to find the owner and to restore the property to him, is
guilty of theft.
You know what is funny is that just three-or-so days ago, I was telling my wife that I needed to meet up with a friend of mine who I haven't had the chance to visit in a while, and since he and I have met at Hoppy Brewing Company in the past, I was going to suggest that location when we met up again. Uh, cancel that idea!
I urge all of you readers out there to do likewise. Companies who not only hire, but protect employees who steal and have the owner of said company insult loyal customers don't deserve our hard earned $$$. There are plenty of other brewing companies/restaurants in the Sacramento area who would be glad to step up and fill the void. This would include:
Rubicon Brewing Company
River City Brewing Company
Pyramid Alehouse
Hogshead Brew Pub
B.J.'s Restaurant and Brewery
Pete's Restaurant and Brewhouse
Sacramento Brewing Company Oasis
Sudwerk (Davis, CA)
Yager's Tap House and Grill (Folsom, CA)
Google or Bing any one of these fine establishments to find their location and amenities, and when you sidle up to the bar or take your seat at a table, tell them Hoppy sent you!

I think when you spread the GPA points around, it's good for everybody
For the last several years, the Young America's Foundation has taken Obama's belief and run with it by asking members to go on college campuses and ask students to sign petitions calling for GPA points from the top 10% of grade getters to be redistributed to those students whose grades are not so good. Many students who would be all for redistributing your income sing a far different tune when faced with the prospect of having their high grades redistributed.
Watch the hilarity ensue:
I have seen past videos on this topic, and it never ceases to amaze me as I watch someone who is presumably all in favor of taking one person's hard earned money and handing it to someone who didn't earn it, turn right around and balk at giving up some of their hard-earned grades to a fellow student who didn't earn it. What a great and simple way to illustrate the insanity of such a bankrupt ideology that, unfortunately, holds millions of Americans in thrall.

Did you know that Ron Paul has won the caucuses in Iowa and Minnesota?
What a lot of people don't realize is that the popular vote is not necessarily the most important aspect of a state party caucus or primary; it is the number of convention delegates the candidates receive. And Ron Paul has now locked down enough delegates to be declared either the winner, or tied for the win in both Iowa (Yes, Iowa) and Minnesota.
For a detailed breakdown of how this is possible, watch this segment from - wait for it - MSNBC's Rachel Maddow. Keep in mind, that the very statist, left-wing Maddow is gleefully reporting this story from the angle of showing the incompetence and behind-the-scenes chicanery of the Republican establishment as they carry out these primaries and caucuses. But while she is doing that, she also correctly reporting the situation:
Does this mean that I think Ron Paul is going to secure the Republican nomination? Not necessarily. But what this story does show is that the conservative base is extremely unhappy with the forced coronation of the maddeningly moderate Mitt. He is already falling into McCain mode by stumping for Barack Obama by telling us what a nice guy Barack is. Gag me. And many others are gagged by it too.
Let us hope that Ron Paul continues to be an influence in keeping the establishment Republicans from licking Obama's jackboots too early in the campaign.

Columnist urges George Zimmerman to take one for the team
As George Zimmerman faces murder charges for shooting Trayvon Martin, it’s worth asking if America is in danger of facing Rodney King, Part II?Uh, no - the paramount concern should be the same one that applies to any criminal trial, and that is to see that justice is done. And if justice decides that Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense, then so be it.
That’s what I see down the tracks: If this case goes all the way to trial, it’s a train wreck waiting to happen. The time is now for strong hands to take the helm and steady the ship of state—not to mention our national racial, political and legal discourse. The paramount concern has to be to avert a large-scale racial calamity...
For good measure, the column spouts out the now-debunked story that neo-Nazis were patrolling the streets of Sanford, Florida, and the column also features a photo of Rodney King juxtaposed with the outdated photo of cute little 12 year-old Trayvon Martin before he became the menacing 17 year-old No_Limit_Nigga with the gold teeth and the middle finger attached to a tatted-up arm raised in the air. Somehow, those photos never seem to get used.
Once the outcome of trials are decided not on the facts and evidence, but on the prospect of violence committed by people who are unhappy with the trial's outcome, then justice is dead, and so is our country.

The Sociopathic Generation
I am currently teaching them about the War Between the States of 1861-1865, and one of the key terms we discussed was the concept of Total War; as practiced, for example, by General Sherman in Georgia.
Just about every lesson of mine is accompanied by a Power Point slideshow that is heavy on images and photos. After showing them photos of General Sherman, the skeletal remains of buildings in Richmond, and a Sherman necktie, I went to some other slides showing examples of Total War that was carried out in World War II, which was the quintessential Total War. I showed photos of B-17s dropping bombs, the burned-out remains of the city of Dresden, and then this photo:

I told the class that I didn't see what was funny about any of this, and that made them laugh some more. The more horrified I became at their laughing, the funnier they thought it was.
I finally sat down in the chair at my desk... defeated.
I clicked to the next slide, which had some bullet statements they needed to copy down. While they did that, the laughter started to subside as the students began to concentrate on copying down the information. As I sat there still in shock, my curiosity got the best of me, and I posed a question to the class.
"I don't understand why you guys started laughing when I told you that the Japanese did that to the Chinese. Someone please enlighten me."
A student blurted out, "We thought they was cousins!"
My God, what have we wrought?

Tax Freedom Day!

Yes, that's right: Ever since January 1, 2012, every last penny, nickel, and dime you have worked long hours to obtain has not gone to you but to your federal, state, and local governments to pay the myriad of taxes that have been levied upon us.
Think of all the hours of work you have put in from then until now. What I really love from the article I linked is that in 1913, when the travesty known as our federal income tax was established, Tax Freedom Day arrived on January 19th.
Kinda puts everything into focus, doesn't it?

I smell a kangaroo court trial coming
You don't have to watch the full 24 minutes of her press conference where she announces that charges have been filed, but just watching the first thirty seconds will give you a good idea of how all this is going to play out.
First, note her cheerful demeanor, and then her reference to Trayvon's "sweet parents" for whom she asked us to pray. And yes, that's "Trayvon." Apparently Corey is now on a first-name basis with him. I wonder if she will also call him by his other name: No_Limit_Nigga, which was Trayvon Martin's Twitter handle. For some real depraved entertainment and enlightenment, I dare you to click on the link and read some of No_Limit_Nigga's tweets. They paint a much different picture than the 12 year-old cherub whose photo the lamestream news media keeps running of Trayvon Martin.
I look at these charges against George Zimmerman to be a textbook case of democracy in action: If charges weren't filed, the mob would have most likely rioted. Now that charges have been filed, the mob will most likely riot if Zimmerman is not found guilty as charged.
Try getting a fair trial under those circumstances.

Cowards from National Review dismiss John Derbyshire for trying to have a Courageous Conversation

Lo and behold, not too many days after I wrote that piece, a similar article was written by John Derbyshire, who is (was) best known as a contributing writer to the so-called conservative publication National Review.
Derbyshire didn't actually write his article for National Review; it instead was published in an online publication called Taki's Magazine, or Taki Mag, for short.
As I did, Derbyshire acknowledged the many newspaper articles and blog posts about black parents having "the talk" with their kids about what they will need to know when they deal with white people throughout their lives. And as I did, Derbyshire then detailed a hypothetical conversation he would have with his kids about dealing with black people throughout their lives.
In all his points, Derbyshire provided links to back up what he was saying, but that did not matter. The left side of the blogosphere and media had a predictable conniption fit over Derbyshire's article. What saddened me was the reaction from the controlled conservative opposition at such places as HotAir.com, certain writers at AmericanThinker.com, and of course, National Review. Within just a couple days after Derbyshire published his article at Taki Mag, National Review wiped their hands of Derbyshire. By doing so, National Review simply proved the point I made in my piece about all those people out there who are too cowardly to have these courageous conversations such as Derbyshire attempted to start. What was sadly amusing is that most of the criticism of Derbyshire's article - from either side of the political spectrum - was rather short on substance, but long on emotion. For most critics, their concern did not appear to be that anything Derbyshire wrote was incorrect - like I said, he heavily sourced his article - their concern appeared to be that Derbyshire dared speak that which should not be spoken, no matter how truthful it may be. After all, feelings could be hurt!
As a prime example, just read the following from the blog post written by National Review's editor, Rich Lowry, in which he informed readers that NR had disassociated themselves from Derbyshire:
[Derbyshire's] latest provocation, in a webzine, lurches from the politically incorrect to the nasty and indefensible....I see some critical statements there, but "incorrect," "wrong," "non-factual," and "liar/lying/prevarication" are not among them.
I am sorry that Derbyshire had to pay the ultimate professional price for expressing his views, but I respect him deeply for taking that plunge. It is one thing for these courageous conversations to be started like a nobody blogger like myself, but John Derbyshire of National Review magazine cannot be so easily ignored.
Unlike the bigwigs at National Review, John Derbyshire chose not to be a coward. My hat is off to you, Mr. Derbyshire.

Say hello to the newest member of my family

I recently posted a YouTube video of me shooting my other baby - my 7.62X39mm SKS. For my next rifle purchase, I thought I would dial down the power a bit and buy a rifle that I can use to teach my kids how to shoot, and the rifle you see pictured above is that purchase (I paid $148 on sale, with 10%-off coupon, along with a $25 background check fee).
Last Sunday, I took my son and daughter with me to Big 5 and purchased a Marlin 795 .22 Long Rifle. I had read reviews of .22's, and the consensus seemed to be that the Marlin was one of best. In fact, there seemed to be a mini-war going on between fans of the Marlin and the Ruger 10/22. The consensus was that the Ruger is superior if you are going to add a bunch of bells and whistles to it, but the Marlin was more accurate right out of the box.
This was also an interesting experience as it was my first ever gun purchase from an actual retailer. All my other guns have either been given to me or I purchased from a private owner. The paperwork involved was honestly not as bad as I anticipated. There was a rather thick form that needed to be filled out, but I only had to fill out the first page, and the dealer does the rest of it. I was rather perturbed, but not surprised, that I was levied a $25 fee for a background check. Golly gee, don't I pay taxes for the government to do things like this? What the fee essentially represents, is the government's petty piece of revenge - a punishment - for me buying a gun. They'll show me, right?

"Courageous Conversations" in a "nation of cowards"
As a public school teacher, I have been exposed many times to the term "courageous conversations." The term comes from a race-hustling "diversity" consultant named Glenn Singleton who is hired by various school districts across the country to advise them on ways to bridge the "achievement gap" in test scores and academic performance that exist between certain student demographics - especially between white and black students. Singleton often ends up embarrassing the districts that hire him, such as the Seattle public schools, where the district was ridiculed nationwide after posting on their website that - as Singleton instructed them - only whites can be racist, and that it is racist to expect minorities to have the wherewithal to plan for the future, as they do not have the same future-time orientation that whites have. Yes, really. Singleton is essentially known as a one-trick pony who blames the actions and attitudes of white people for all that is wrong or perceived to be wrong in minority - read: black - communities. He especially lays out these simplistic theories of his in a book he coauthored back in 2005 called Courageous Conversations About Race - if you consider the tired position of blaming whites for everything to be courageous.
Next, we have our illustrious Attorney General, Eric Holder, who, during a February, 2009 Black History Month speech, stated on televised record:
Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot in things racial, we have always been, and we, I believe, continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards.Well then, everyone, let us not be cowards; let us have a courageous conversation about race relations, no matter how painful it may be to discuss.
Though race-related issues continue to occupy a significant portion of our political discussion, and though there remain many unresolved racial issues in this nation, we, average Americans, simply do not talk enough with each other about things racial...
It is an easy thing not to talk about these things. It is a painful thing to discuss them....
The national news cycle continues to remain gripped in the clutches of the media's obsession with the shooting death of black 17 year-old Trayvon Martin at the hands of Hispanic 28 year-old George Zimmerman. Just in the last day or two, more information has been released about the interaction between the two men that shows Martin may have been the aggressor and Zimmerman the victim, and also information and photos that show Martin was not the innocent angel his friends and parents made him out to be. Like I said in my previous post, however, there is still not enough official information released to make a complete call on this incident one way or the other.
I did notice two different news stories released within days of each other that caught my attention. Just listing the headlines will alert you to the common theme of the two articles.
The first headline comes from Associated Press (AP):
Trayvon Martin, my son, and the black male code
The second headline comes from the Chicago Tribune, but ran nationally:
Parents of black teens find Trayvon Martin case hits close to home
Highlights from the AP article are as follows:
I thought my [12 year old] son would be much older before I had to tell him about the Black Male Code... [b]ut after the Trayvon Martin tragedy, I needed to explain to my child that soon people might be afraid of him...From the Tribune article, I note the following:
As I explained it, the Code goes like this:Always pay close attention to your surroundings, son, especially if you are in an affluent neighborhood where black folks are few. Understand that even though you are not a criminal, some people might assume you are, especially if you are wearing certain clothes...
When their son was about to enter his teens, Paul and Jeanne Miller of Flossmoor decided it was time to have the talk. As a black male, they told him, some people will make judgments about you and view you with suspicion based solely on your race... The [Martin/Zimmerman] case once again placed a spotlight on race in America and forced discussions about the negative perceptions some people have regarding black men... The reality is that many Americans...perceive young black men to be 'suspicious' individuals who will rob them, confront them and carry a firearm to threaten their safety, independent of whether it is true or not... Young black men go through the world being harassed, watched and stereotyped. They live with that every day, and far too many of us have ignored their reality...Reading these two articles struck a chord with me, as I have also been planning to have "courageous conversations" with my 7 year-old son and my 5 year-old daughter when they get a little older. The difference is that the conversations will come from the opposite spectrum. As white children who will one day grow into white teenagers and then white adults, I feel it is my parental duty to warn them about the dangers they face from people of certain races who, quite unfortunately, commit violent crime out of all proportion to the percentage of their numbers in our society. The father in the first article tells his son to be aware of his surroundings; so will I tell my children to be aware of their surroundings. For instance, if they are walking down the sidewalk and are approached by several young black men dressed in "the uniform" of sagging pants, or hoodies, or flat-billed baseball caps worn jauntily on top of their heads, I will instruct my children that they should start walking the other direction, or cross to the other side of the street, or even run if they feel it is necessary.
I can hear some of you out there now: What are doing? You can't say this! What are you? Some kind of racist?
To that I say, don't start getting cowardly on me now! We need to continue this courageous conversation and not devolve into name calling!
There is a reason why so many people stereotype black men, perceive them as threatening, and have negative perceptions of them. That is because black men - especially young black men - commit a vast amount of violent crime in this country; an amount that is far out of proportion to their numbers in the population.
Let us look at just one example: Aggravated Assault.
The U.S. Justice Department periodically releases detailed crime statistics called the National Crime Victimization Survey. The survey for which I can find the most recent complete results is 2008, so that is the one from which I will quote. If you research the results of other years in this Survey, you will find that the numbers don't change all that much from year to year.
When researching racial crime statistics, one of the most useful sections of the Survey is Table 42. You can take my word for it regarding the numbers, or follow the link to the Survey and check the math yourself.
In the year 2008, there were 436,420 white victims of aggravated assault. In 61.9% of those cases, the assaulter was also white, and in 17.6% of those cases, the assaulter was black.
In the same year, there were 119,090 black victims of aggravated assault. In 62.9% of those cases, the assaulter was also black, and in 12.7% of those cases, the assaulter was white.
First, it is not unusual that in a vast majority of cases, the victim and perpetrator were of the same race - that is true across the board for most crimes in the survey. But since we, and the nation, are supposed to be having courageous conversations about interracial crime, then let's continue.
First off, you see a disparity already: 17.6% black-on-white, versus 12.7% white-on-black. So just based on percentage of the time, blacks commit more aggravated assault upon whites than whites upon blacks. But wait; the most important numbers have not been factored in, and those are the raw numbers of aggravated assault cases, which, again, are 436,420 white versus 119,090 black.
What you discover after doing the math is that in 2008:
76,810 white people were agg. assaulted by blacks.
15,124 black people were agg. assaulted by whites.
If the number of whites and blacks in this country's population were perfectly equal, the discrepancy in the above numbers would be horrific enough, but it is even worse than it appears, for don't forget that whites outnumber blacks in this country by a factor of 5. So, even though there are five times as many whites in this country as blacks, blacks still managed to agg. assault five times as many whites as whites did to blacks.
And that is just aggravated assault. The Victimization Survey shows similar disparities over and over when it comes to interracial violent crime.
Judging by the news we watch, you would never know this, as any white-on-black violence tends to be nationally reported and sensationalized (think the 1998 dragging death of James Byrd in Texas), while any black-on-white violence is usually kept restricted to local media coverage and is quickly dropped down the memory hole.
While the news media and the nation wring their hands and obsess about George Zimmerman (who is not even white!) shooting Trayvon Martin, I ask if any of the following cases from the last few years have gotten even a fraction of attention from the national media and usual race hustlers that the Martin/Zimmerman case has received:
- Last month, a 13 year-old white high schooler in Kansas City was followed to his home by two black teenagers who also attended his school. As the white boy struggled to unlock his front door, the two black boys grabbed him, doused him with gasoline, and set him on fire while yelling, "This is what you deserve! You get what you deserve, white boy!" Reverse the races in this incident and tell me that there would not be national outrage and marches in the street.
- In 2009, at least 32 black gang members were arrested for committing dozens of racially motivated beatings and muggings of whites and Hispanics in downtown Denver, Colorado. These gang members would often film their misdeeds and post them online. Reverse the races in this incident, and tell me that there would not be national outrage and marches in the street.
- In the city of St. Louis, dozens of white and Asian people have been attacked by roving packs of black boys and young men who are engaging in a "game" called Knockout King. The object of the "game" is to walk up to a random person on the street (who somehow is never black; just white, Hispanic, or Asian) and knock the person unconscious with one punch. There have been two especially notorious incidents involving Knockout King. In the first, an elderly Vietnamese man named Hoang Nguyen was struck in the face and died after his head hit the pavement. He was also repeatedly hit and kicked while he lay unconscious on the ground. In a second notorious incident, a white man named Matt Quain was attacked right in front of the mayor of St. Louis, who came to Quain's aid. Even with a witness like that, charges against Quain's seven black teenage (alleged) attackers were dropped, to the cheers of the (alleged) attackers and their family members. Days later, some of the (alleged) attackers began threatening Quain. Reverse the races in all these incidents and tell me there would not be national outrage and marches in the street.
- Just this month, a 90 year-old husband, Bob Strait, and his 85 year-old wife, Nancy, who had been married for 65 years, were severely beaten by 20 year-old home invader Tyrone Woodfork. Bob, a WWII veteran of the 101st Airborne Division, is still in the hospital with critical injuries, but Nancy was beaten to death by Woodfork. Reverse the races in this incident and tell me there would not be national outrage and marches in the street.
- At the Wisconsin State Fair in the summer of 2011, white fairgoers were accosted and pulled out of their cars in the parking lot and beaten by a mob of blacks that numbered in the "dozens to hundreds." Reverse the races in this incident and tell me that there would not be national outrage and marches in the street.
- At the Iowa State Fair in the summer of 2010, dozens of blacks rampaged through the fairgrounds, attacking random white fairgoers in what the participants called "Beat Whitey Night." Reverse the races in this incident and try to imagine the national news media and the good Reverends Sharpton and Jackson ignoring a "Beat Blackie Night" by dozens of rampaging white people.
- In Knoxville, Tennessee in 2007, a white couple in their early 20s, Christopher Newsome and Channon Christian, were carjacked and kidnapped by five blacks. The couple were kept in the home of one of the perpetrators for two days where they were tortured, raped, beaten, and eventually murdered. Newsome was shot and his body was set on fire. Christian had bleach poured down her throat, and then she was stuffed into a trash can where she suffocated. Reverse the races in this incident and tell me that there would not be national outrage and marches in the street.
- In Wichita, Kansas in 2000, two black brothers went on a crime spree in which they eventually killed, robbed, and/or raped five white people and left a sixth for dead. The last five victims were kidnapped together at their townhouse where they were either raped or forced to have sex with each other and then taken to a snowy soccer field where they were forced to kneel and then shot in the head execution-style. One of those victims survived being shot, seeking help by walking a mile, naked in the snow, with a bullet wound to her head. Reverse the races in this incident and tell me that there would not be national outrage and marches in the street.
In addition to these outrageous acts that don't elicit a response from the two Reverends or our President, I am struck by the relative lack of interest by these and other race hustlers in the murder and chaos happening in our inner-cities where blacks are killing and maiming other blacks. In Chicago - the home turf of Barack Obama and Jesse Jackson - during the same week that the Martin/Zimmerman story was heating up, the Windy City saw one weekend in March of this year in which 40 people were shot and 10 of them were killed. Most of these shooting victims were black, as were their attackers. Nationwide, according to the FBI, 53% of the murders committed in the United States in 2010 were committed by blacks, while blacks made up about 50% of the murder victims. Keep in mind that blacks only make up about 13% of our nation's population, and also keep in mind that most of these murders were committed by young black men who make up somewhere around 5-7% of our nation's population - according to the FBI's 2010 statistics, 58% of black murder offenders and 51% of black murder victims were between the ages of 17 and 30. Where are the marches in the street over that? Instead, Sharpton, Jackson, the New Black Panthers, and thousands of blacks wearing hoodies are down in Florida marching in honor of Trayvon Martin because he was shot by a Hispanic with white ancestry. The selective outrage is simply astonishing.
In light of all this, these black parents mentioned in the AP and Tribune articles are free to have courageous conversations with their kids and tell them to watch their backs. In the meantime, in courageous conversations of my own, I will tell my kids to do likewise.

Martin and Zimmerman: I don't know what happened, and neither do you.
To begin the timeline, we start with the perplexing fact that the incident itself happened back in late February, but somehow the lamestream news media did not become obsessed with it until the middle of March - coincidentally right around the time that the media-manufactured reporting about the Republican "war on women" was fizzling out after conservative pundits and bloggers began pointing to the plethora of examples of lefties like Bill Maher and Ed Schultz saying far worse things than Rush Limbaugh could imagine. Sooooo, on to the next media attempt at deflecting public attention to the horrific job that Obama is doing as our president. Since the "war on women" turned out to be a flop, I guess the news media is now trying a "war on blacks" meme instead. The Martin/Zimmerman affair is just what I believe to be the opening salvo.
When the national reporting about Martin and Zimmerman began, Zimmerman was repeatedly referred to as a "white neighborhood watch captain." This was most likely based on the initial police report of the incident that described Zimmerman as white. Media sites began scrubbing the word "white" once a photograph of George Zimmerman was released and it was painfully obvious that he was not White - he was Hispanic/Amerindian. Of course, common law enforcement practice is to describe Hispanic crime victims as Hispanic, but Hispanic crime suspects as White.
Then, since the shooter turned out to also be a minority, the news media who had jumped the gun and tried to make it a black/white thing, simply downplayed the fact that Zimmerman is Hispanic, and tried to make the 17 year-old Trayvon Martin seem as innocent as possible by only showing outdated photos of him and emphasizing that he was only walking home armed with Skittles and an iced tea, and that he was accosted by the overzealous neighborhood watch captain, Zimmerman.
That last description seems to have been the one that seems to have stuck over the last week or so, as just about everyone in the chattering class - Statist or Conservative - has condemned George Zimmerman for his allegedly aggressive and racially profiling ways.
But now, even that story might collapse, as a witness to the incident is now affirming that he saw Trayvon Martin on top of George Zimmerman, and that Zimmerman was yelling for help. Additionally, the same police report that the media depended on to describe Zimmerman as white also stated that a responding police officer found Zimmerman's back wet with dew and grass stains, and the back of his head and his nose wet with blood. If Zimmerman supposedly shot down Martin in cold blood, as many protesters seem to attest, then how did Zimmerman sustain these injuries?
The bottom line, is that I have know idea what happened; I wasn't there. Yet I see my TV screen filled with the faces of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Barack Obama, and their many sign-carrying minions talking and acting as if they do know what happened.
I have more to say on this topic, but once a post reaches a certain length, I know a lot of people give up and either skim or skip. In the meantime, people around the country need to cool their jets on this one and stop trying to turn one person into a saint and another into a sinner. Life is rarely that simple.

Yes, that's right... we don't like that flag being up there because President Obama is partially of African heritage. It would have nothing to do with the tradition we have in this country of not going down the road of flying flags like this:

In the end, these Obamabots shouldn't be flying a flag with their Messiah's image on it, as he has made it known that he isn't much of a flag fan anyway:

(Hopefully) coming to a classroom near me
JAPAN INVENTS SPEECH-JAMMING GUN THAT SILENCES PEOPLE MID-SENTENCEYou know how teachers are always complaining about having to pay for classroom supplies out of their own pocket? In this case I would gladly dig deep in order to get my hands on one of these devices! I would get one for my wife, too. She teaches a bunch of inner-city first graders who are even more verbose and disruptive than the middle schoolers with whom I deal every day.
Japanese researchers have invented a speech-jamming gadget that painlessly forces people into silence.
Kazutaka Kurihara of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, and Koji Tsukada of Ochanomizu University, developed a portable "SpeechJammer" gun that can silence people more than 30 meters away.
The device works by recording its target's speech then firing their words back at them with a 0.2-second delay, which affects the brain's cognitive processes and causes speakers to stutter before silencing them completely....
Yeah, yeah - so the device is a little Orwellian. C'est la vie.
