You have heard that oft-repeated mantra, and for many Republicans, it is starting to become their new reality. I have been a small-r-republican for about ten years now, keeping my party membership only to be able to vote in the primaries; otherwise, I vote as I please in the general elections.
Lately though, due to President Bush's shenanigans with spending, his mishandling of the Iraq War, and now especially, his lunacy regarding immigration, he has managed to do what Jimmy Carter has done, and that is to piss off both sides of the political aisle with his obtuseness and incompetence. The time has finally come when many Republicans are finally starting to say they've had enough.
This fact has been wonderfully articulated in an important column by Wall Street Journal writer and former Reagan speech writer Peggy Noonan.
The problem for Republicans is that if they leave the party, turning to the Democrats is simply unacceptable, since the whole problem in the first place is that the Republican leadership are becoming more and more like the Democrats every day. If this betrayal keeps up, I can see the Republican party going the way of the Whig party, which is ironic, since the Republicans replaced the Whigs in the 1850s.

I lost my faith in the leadership of the Republican party long ago, after they brightened our world with their promises of their "Contract with America," then did nothing but turn into the type of politicians I loath; pork barrel spending, back-room deals, etc. So, I am now a registered Independant.
Democrats? IMO, too many wealthy people (like Feinstein, Boxer and Pelosi, and Kennedy, and Edwards and Kerry......) who want our money (taxes) to buy the votes (and power that comes with it) from the poor, recently immigrated, minority etc. segment of the population. They know how best to spend out tax dollars and the heck with the basic needs of middle class Americans. They are NOT the party that produced Thomas Jefferson.
We need an "American Working Class Peoples" Party (call it what you want), who will serve their country then return to their jobs, be unswayed by special interests and be only interested in what is best for the USA.
Do you really think it is possible that there is a group of people that will stick to the straight and narrow. Do we want them to? All the pork barrel spending is done to assuage the constituents of the politicians. It has been the same throughout history that we will bellow about pork barrel spending when it is done in someone else's name. When it is done in our name it is necessary and proper spending. I think you guys are being sanctimonious about spending by calling for the heads of those Republicans who do it when they are in power. I would love to see that politicians are "citizen politicians" but they are only citizen politicians when they have failed to please their constituents and are turned out in the next election. Pure democracy went out in ancient Greece. Now it's about power.
W's latest attack on the Reagan folk is just another indication thea none of the Bushes has got over the drubing George 1 took in the 80 primaries. All the bushes hate reagan folk so much that if the only way to get back at them is to destroy the GOP they will destroy the GOP. As both George 1 + 2 have and are demonstrating.
I suggest you do some reading about Reagan and the relationship he had with Bush, his VP. The respect they shared was mutual and deep. On numerous occassions Bush has stated that he considers Reagan to be his political mentor. How did Reagan feel? Read the "Reagan Diaries" just out. I don't think anyone was/is trying to destroy anything.
