I was in 8th grade when I watched the Space Shuttle Challenger explode live on television. It was on this day, 25 years ago. Until September 11, 2001, it was January 28, 1986 that was the day in the news that I remembered most.
Last year, a video was released on YouTube that shows a home video taken by a man from his home as he, his wife, and his neighbors watched the launch from their front yard. It is always interesting to watch an event like this through the eyes of ordinary people, rather than through the cameras and commentary of the news media:

I was ditching my 5th period class at the local pizza joint with my best friend when the Challenger exploded. My buddy and I were just frozen in place looking at where the Challenger used to be. I heard a snippet of Reagan's speech on the radio and had to wipe away some tears.
Just watched a horrible vid about the Columbia, which I think was destroyed Feb. 1.
On January 28, 1986 I was sitting in room 16, my first grade class. Twenty-five years to the day, I am teaching kindergarten in that very classroom.

It didn't explode. It ripped apart. I learned this watching the NASA DVD I have on the Challenger Commission. Had it exploded, the SRB's would have exploded. That cloud you saw was the LOX suddenly released to atmospheric pressure.
