The creepiest two words I have heard uttered lately

David Horowitz gave a talk yesterday (5/10/10) at UC San Diego. As is customary, after his speech, he did a Q&A session with the audience. During the Q&A, Horowitz had an exchange with a female member of the campus Muslim Student Association (MSA) that I found absolutely extraordinary.

Horowitz asked the student a very simple question, and after some hemming and hawing, received a very simple two-word answer that sent a chill down my spine.

To get a feel for the entire exchange, I recommend watching the whole video. But if you want to cut to the chase, skip to exactly 2:30 and watch the final minute or so:

"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free... it expects what never was, and never will be." -Thomas Jefferson

I rarely have a physical response to something I see on TV. Things like 9/11 and the Space Shuttle blowing up (twice) and the swearing in of a new president have, in the past, brought on such a reaction. Now I shall add this to my list. Absolutely enlightening and terrifying. Thank you (I think, for sharing)

The policy of Israel is to detain Palestinians and literally fence them into ghettos. The conditions under which Palestinians live rivals the European Jewish ghettos of the 30s. This young woman's response is hideous. But the speaker's lack of attention to the suffering of a people by the hands of his own is the reason vengeance recycles. Remember when Israel bombed the living daylights out of Lebanon - hitting residential neighborhoods, barring supplies, destroying the infrastructure? Or the Gaza offensive in Dec. 08 - cutting off supplies, bombing residents and their homes? There is much anger on both sides. In the video, they both anted up the rhetoric.

Please read the Red Cross report on the conditions children, adults and the elderly live in:http://www.icrc.org/web/eng/siteeng0.nsf/html/palestine-news-170210!OpenDocument

Emily,
Your side really has to get some new talking points. Palestinians in Israel enjoy more rights than any other country in the region. They are citizens, they have representation in the Israeli government, and they are free to live their lives.

As for the Israeli bombing runs, it's pretty hard not to hit civilians when Hamas and Hezbollah intentionally station their rocket launchers in civilian areas in the hope that Israeli jets and helicopters will accidentally kill civilians in the process of taking out the rocket launchers.

Best of luck to ya.
