And then there was one...

Did you know there is only one remaining World War I veteran alive in the United States? He went to France but never saw combat. He ended up guarding German prisoners of war after the armistice had been signed.

His name is Frank Buckles. He was born in 1901, and you can read his story here.

That's interesting...I heard somewhere (read somewhere?) that there were 3...

One of my favorite WWI vet stories...a few years ago my friend was the historian at the VA Hospital in Dayton - originally an Old Soldiers Home post-Civil War. Anyhow, they did a big veterans day thing about 12 years ago and had the few WWI vets featured. Obviously they weren't the most spry guys in the auditorium but one of them kept interrupting the program by yelling "Where's the dancing girls? I was told there'd be dancing girls!" over and over again. Gotta love him!
